As the Spanish Influenza reaches Mount Pleasant, Annie and the girls witness many funerals and deaths - even Elsie's. Rosie and the others (and Annie later joins in) frequently tease and bully Elsie. As time passes, Annie becomes friends with Rosie and some of the other girls, and Elsie becomes jealous about begins to stalk Annie outside her house.

We immediately sense that Elsie's home life is not ideal - to where she would rather stay at a friend's house than go home. When Elsie follows Annie home, Elsie confides in that Annie is lucky that she has such a nice family and home.

Annie attends the Pearce Academy for Girls, and is quickly sought after by a lonely German girl, Elsie Schnider. Annie and her family have just moved to the new town of Mount Pleasant. The story is about a young girl named Annie Browne. One for Sorrow is a suspenseful story set during 1917-1918, so just right at the end of World War 1 and the outbreak of the Spanish Influenza pandemic.
